DEAD AGAIN

IMG_0800

So Grime is dead again… yippee, the best thing about that is Logan Sama has rereleased his “grime is dead” T Shirts (first issued in 2007) and what he said at that time still resonating, grime is dead to people who follow hype and money and good riddance (my interpretation).

Meantime grime is so dead that I can’t find time to blog about all the grime releases coming out, too many to mention, so focusing for now on the areas that hold special interest to me which is independent artists and labels, who in my opinion are flying the flag…

Limited edition instrumental vinyl releases are selling out on Slimzos and sister label Rot Pot and new addition to the family 2002 Records. Ive already waxed lyrical about SLIMZOS, its focusing on straight grime, brutal and beautiful bass heavy no nonsense productions from old skool DJ/producer label boss DJ Garna, who runs the three labels along side the “Godfather” Slimzee, and their righthand man As If Kid. DJ Garnas’ Magic EP is out now ( members only digital DL ), Rot Pot is more of a breakbeat label with strong flavours of grime and drum and bass, and 2002 a tip of the hat to old skool Grime with promises of future rereleases of unattainable early grime, first release “Champion” by Garna, on the flip side “Left Out” by As If Kid sold out in barely over a week. Their subscription based membership only downloads, and limited vinyl presses have set a precedent for independent labels, fulfilling a niche for collectors, in a world of disposable music, vinyl represents music made to be cherished over time. Their collections showcase an array of fresh styles, no mercy tunes from Slimzee and As If Kid, DJ Garna, Spooky, Boylan, Trends, USF, Filthy Gears, Oddkut, Dallen, Deuce, Mastermune, DJ Vader.

Spooky Bizzles’ Clartplate 001 with Boylan sold in the blink of an eye, and Ghost House Dubs so much in demand Spooky is hinting of a Gold Finger VIP repress.

The legendary “Playground” latest V.I.P is still available from his bandcamp limited edition 10″ promo , when its gone its gone signed copy

“Swaggy in the Baggy” is a modern classic by Nasty Jack produced by Spooky available now on all major music platforms.

New high end quality labels such as Dream Eater and Bookey Records are holding court with some of the finest creme de la creme producers. Dream Eater now on their 004 vinyl only release (they also have digital release free DL on soundcloud) showcasing oldskool masters JT the Goon and Maniac, also outstanding producers of modern grime such as Filthy Gears, and dubstep JFO, and some exquisite tracks from producers Sir Hiss, Nights, Proc Fiscal, Polonis, Dr Hugo, B thorough, Kotei each of whom are evolving their own unique style.

Bookey Records, the brainchild of DJ Citrus (Mode FM) is a vinyl only label making a very strong debut release, a limited edition of 10, showcasing producer DEFIANTs’ wardubs from Mode FM Beat Boss tournament.

Dexplicit cemented his place in history by producing Grime classic “POW” but thats only the tip of the iceberg. As a producer he has mastered, evolved and intertwined a range of genres garage, 4×4 and baseline, his label DXP Recordings showcasing a prolific range of releases since 2005 including DXP 025 “OLD SCHOOL GRIME” (Instrumentals) a 50 grime track goodie bag and Pull Up Dat and The Real Hench EP joyfully ferociously intense and driving riddims.

Dexplicit work rate hasn’t let up and he has to be admired for supporting production workshops for young women, and releasing emerging artists such as Outsider, (Armoury EP earlier in the year on DXP).

Back in 2005,Dubz Vol.1 was released on More2dafloor a delightful playful mixture of garage 4×4 grime and ‘je ne sais quoi’. Thirteen years on Dexplicit productions are still as playful, fun and energetic Dubz Vol 3 is out now.

BOXED is a brand, label and night club hosts run by a collective, Slackk, Mr. Mitch, Logos (and until recently Oil Gang).

BOXED were one of the first promoters to run Grime events in Peckham, in the old Peckham Paladium, or Palace(?), that unfortunately no longer exists as a venue, back in the days when breakdown services fear tread foot there….

As a label Boxed have pushed forward what I can only describe as a kind of cutting edge, intellectual, sharp and cleanly shaved style of grime, sino grime, or experimental electronica. Quality is an essence and their latest release Boxed V is yet another gem with 25 excellent tracks by choice producers.

JAMMER – ARE YOU DUMB? Vol.5 OUT NOW

Are You Dumb Vol.5 by Jammer out now

Jammer aka Murkle Man needs no introduction except to those who are new to grime, a pioneer of the scene, and instigator of the world renown and now legendary vocal clashes filmed from his basement Lord of the Mics series.

Like a kind of wizard Jammer seems to be everywhere and have his finger in almost every Grime pie.

MC/producer in early days he formed a crew with D Double E and Hyper,187 crew, after D Double joined NASTY (Natural Artistic Sounds Touching You) he asked Jammer to join too. After leaving NASTY CREW, Jammer then collaborated with Slew Dem on vocals as MURKLE MAN, currently he is member of Boy Better Know undoubtedly the most commercially successful and best known Grime crew. Not least of his contribution his mixtape series “Are You Dum”, Vol.1 was released back in 2006 featuring what have become, a wall of fame grime MCs.

Ten years after the last release Are You Dumb Vol.4 Jammer brings out After Vol.5, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Vol.5 features DESPERADO, D DOUBLE E, SOX, JME, SHORTY, BLAKIE,GIANNO,LARNELL KELLER, J2K, DIZZLE, AP, FUSION, FOOTSIE, BRUZA, DAVINCHE, and singer TARA-LILY.

DARX – DARX 001 + 002 – DARK ELEMENTS – OUT NOW

DARX is one of the most unique grime producers of these times, as the name suggests his productions are dark brooding twilight landscapes, 2018 will be the year he starts to get the recognition he deserves.

Hanging around in Birmingham with the likes of BIG MIKEE, DEVILMAN, DEADLY,and MAYHEM around seven years ago he was inspired to get involved and he started making his own style beats, and formed the collective and label DARK ELEMENTS.

As founder of the collective DARK ELEMENTS, DARX has reason to be proud, Dark Elements stands out in UK Grime, showcasing raw uncompromising sounds, made up of a collective of producers and MCs, DARX, DEVILMAN, BIG MIKEE, SKINZMANN, HITMAN, VADER, MAYHEM, CHRONIC, BADNESS, and a lot of other names who feature on his older projects Summer and Winter Sprayout (links below).

“When we all come together its Dark Elements and i feel its the rawest sound.”

GRIME in PORTO Hard Club 7 DEC

banner

The Portuguese as a nation love their art. You can see from the marble patterns on the streets you walk on,the wrought iron railings, the detailed tiling, the whole of Portugal is exquisite… the streets are like a fairytale.

Grime Disse Ela promotional team GRIMEFELLAS bring new art to Porto in the form of Grime, showcasing first grime event in Portugal.

Grime like punk, roots are raw and untamed, and there lies its beauty.

Yellow Stripe Loves Prspct have run Drum & Bass events in Porto for 15 years & let Grimefellas takeover Room 2, Hard Club to showcase some very exciting guest dj/producers from UK.

SirPixalot & Triple S (Chemist Rns and MoJoe). Sirpixalot won Mode FM Beatboss tournament 3 and has releases on some of the UKs best respected and pioneering Grime labels.

Triple S’s album “Pull Up” reach number one in Juno digital bass charts and featured as album of the month September 17 edition.

Rui aka Expeao has been pioneering the Grime/Dubstep here in Portugal for around 10 years, a man with many strings to his bow, one of the best known Hip Hop artists classics releases such as Biarro. FOR THIS EVENT HE WILL BE PLAYING A DJ SET, and performing live with MC Berna “Quando entry” (produced by Sirpixalot). He also formed live act duo project Santo Ovidio Grime, with MC Rato54.

DJ BPM dj/producer from Ireland has been collecting rare white label grime vinyl promos since 2004 and showcasing Grime around the world. “Best female grime DJ on the planet” according to grime pioneer J Sweet label boss Marxmen Dubs & producer of early JME and Skepta tracks).

Berna is a well respected MC in his own right and member of Pro’seeds, will make a guest appearance.

X-RAVER aka Sandro Moreira visual artist will be projecting some visual poetry.

Word has it the sound system at the Hard Club is incredible (stone throw from Sao Bento Station). Porto showcases the first gig of this type in the whole of Portugal, played like this, with the full bass effect! Combining Portuguese,UK, and Irish artists.

“BANG YA HEAD” YOUNGSTAR & PAKIN – 1st Dec

Bang Ya Head by Youngstar & Pakin OUT NOW 1 Dec 2017

This has got to be grime banger of 2017.Any sentence that contains both the words Youngstar & Pakin means trouble & in song title credits it means double trouble.

Youngstars’ contribution to grime is that of the bones to its body, even newcomers to grime hear tell of the myth that is Pulse.

Pulse X is “that” track, one of the most cited to be that “holy grail” of grime tracks the “1st ever Grime tune” (not that I strictly believe it exists)

Youngstars production “PULSE X” was released in 2002 on Inspirational Records/ Inspired Sounds Records by Musical Mob (the crew Youngstar was member of at that time).

Pulse X & is one of the most sampled/ remixed Grime tunes of all time, also his other classics such as Pulse Y, The Formula, Bongo. My personal favourite “For the Ladies” The Rebirth EP featuring Lorraine Cato.

Then there’s his classic with Dizzee Rascal “Stand Up Tall”

Not to mention the infamous Anal ep (Grime Street) feat Bert & Ernie & an exquisite grime remix of Whitney Huston (no credits on the vinyl presumably because of copyright but Youngstar is my chief suspect).

DDJs, Youngstar label is iconic in its own right. A plethora of releases, joyful heavyweight fun tunes, Youngstar is the grime master of skank.

PAKIN “from Far East Island/ Japan” is a heavyweight Warrior MC. You “don’t need to understand what I say” … his lyrical delivery clouts you round the ears in a way that defies language . His originality & tone cleaves Samurai style through an army of clone MCs straight into the arena of top global Grime vocalists.

Pakins’ GUM project is exhilarating like a audio art gallery showcasing and pushing forward Japanese talent, the hardest vocalists & freshest beats.

Pakins’ collaborations with UK project Dark Elements, such as Anxiety” produced by Darx, have been some of the most innovative & unique in Grime.

There is a story about how this collaboration & DJ BPM special came about,it is best told by a mix… “Don’t throw Pearls to Swine” by DJ BPM hosted by Bluedollarbillz and bursting with exclusives & unreleased dubs (plus a few that are now released).

FILTHY GEARS ALBUM

Cf-oE9lH_400x400

2017 is Filthy Gears year, ask any Grime DJ which producers have been making waves this year and you know that all of them will mention Filthy.

His output has been prolific & extraordinary, his production style diverse covering the spectrum from quirky genius, heart stirring extravaganza – to gentle sublime and everything in-between.

The album features a mixture of vocal & instrumentals tracks, and since his instrumentals stand alone on their own right in that they don’t “need” vocals, you know every vocalist must be on here because Filthy has inspired them, the album showcases collaborations with P Money, Wiley, Vader, Jammz, Capo Lee, John E Clayface, Snowy, Hitman, C Cane, Tex, Discarda, Manga, O.G’z & LV General, YGG, MTP, Culprit, Nutcracker, GHSTLY VII, Reece West, Irah, Kamakaze.

Its gratifying to see a producer who has put the work in get the acclaim he deserves, his track Running feat P Money has just passed 31K listens on youtube and still counting.
